World Disaster Map [via] shows serious widespread problems but also localized issues. It’s quite current. For example, it indicates a problem at the Woman’s Hospital in Toronto which I had also just heard on the news this morning.
Internet Black Holes by Reporters without Borders. [via] I find it hard to express why seeing this map bothers me so much. I’ll leave it at that but I did participate in the survey. I hope you do as well.
I think part of what I find thought provocating is the presentation of these materials. The use of the world map presents the information in a way that connects me to the world. For some people, these types of graphics might make the issues/problems more distant, as they can see how far they are from the event. For me, it brings to mind that it’s all the same planet, and it brings things closer to me. Given that a map is a scaled representation; it shrinks the world down to a size that I feel I can just reach out and touch.
When I was a teenager I had maps up on my wall. This way, I felt more connected to different places and it fueled my dreams of travel. I’ve not done that for a long time. I might have to look at putting up maps again. I think it’s a nice reminder that the world is bigger than the bubble of my every day life.
