Firsts Sock

March 23rd, 2007 by May

boyfriendSocks1-20070323.jpgPhoto is of me wearing the sock, I’ll get G to model the final finished pair.

I managed to finish the first sock of the pair of boyfriend socks yesterday.

G came home and I immediate made him try it on. The fit wasn’t perfect for his foot due to the type of toe. I suspect when I make it again for myself it would be better. I’m going to make minor adjustments to the second sock to see if it helps. But the colour looks great. He seems to like it. And more over, I rather enjoyed knitting it.

It’s a sock of many firsts.

  • First toe up sock.
  • First figure 8 cast on.
  • First wrapping short row heel.
  • First stretchy sew off cast off.*
  • First sock of a pair of matching socks for G.

I’ve put down the sock for a break since there’s some other more pressing knitting projects that needs to be tackled. More on those and photos soon.

* I don’t even know what it’s called. But using yarn needle, purl through the first two stitches leaving on needle, knit through first stitch and drop off. Repeat. Anyone know what this is called?

I think the pointiness of the toe is because you only started with 8 sts (figure 8, right?) When I use the waste yarn/crochet cast on, I have half my total (usually 32 for a 64 st sock) that I’m working short rows on. So the toe tip is about 16 sts, making it more broad.

I also use the stretchy sewn cast-off for toe-ups, and it’s very interesting because it’s like doing the Kitchener stitch but only on one set of stitches. I believe it was an Elizabeth Zimmerman stitch originally.

    Great socks!
