New York Recommendations: Part 5: Random Favorites

May 31st, 2007 by May

This is part five of my New York Recommendations series.

The list here is not totally just for tourists. I couldn’t find a great place to list these but they are part of what I love when I lived there. And if you will believe it, I miss these terribly.

  • K-ROCK, my favorite radio station. Also listen online at KROCK2.com. The programming was just right for me.
  • From Jersey City (where I used to work), you can get a really nice view of Manhattan Lower West Side from the Ferry Pier area. Travel by Path or Ferry to get there.

  • Freshdirectfreshdirectruck.jpg Easy to use website. Fresh and reliable groceries. Shop in your PJs and get it delivered. They know when people are home in NY, none of that stupid week day delivery. Anyone using the service would appreciate home delivery on a weeknight at 10pm.
  • Netflix Oh how I miss Netflix!!!
  • Artista Salon and Spa If you’re looking for a great stylist, I’d recommend Vita. I went to her for YEARS and loved my hair. I’ve not found anyone yet who’s done a good job on my hair since. I hate my hair now.

Travel:

Use the subway, Get a Metrocard! It’s easy to use and it’s best value for the money. If you’ll be there for a week and plan on taking the subway often, buy the weekly card. Otherwise, get a reasonable value card like the $15 one and you’ll be able to hop on and off buses, subways and will even make your trip on the NJ Path easier. hobokenpath.jpg

And pay attention to the posted signs for track work. Especially on weekends or you’ll likely be sorry. If everyone on the train gets off after some funny announcement that you couldn’t understand (you have to have been in the city for a week or two before you tune in properly) get off too. Better safe than sorry.

And yes, I do prefer some buses for some times. Watch out for days when there’s a parade, don’t take the crossdown bus. M14westbound.jpg

And feel free to take the taxi, it’s cheaper than most cities’ taxi services and you’ll get to experience a real ride in the traffic. Some of them are crazy!! Just buckle your seatbelt and try to enjoy it ;)

Swimming pool and gym:

There’s nothing for Hotel info from me since I’ve never really stayed at a Hotel in NY. When I visit I stay with friends… so…

Let’s end with some great links for info on NYC
