Knitting for Peace

June 20th, 2007 by May

To be honest, I thought this book was fluffy and flaky when I first saw it in the window of Purl Soho last year.

But since it was on sale and at such a good price on Amazon recently, I got myself a copy to read. I was blown away.

I know there are many people that knit for charity and it’s mention often on blogs that I read, but I was never drawn to do it. There was just something that never pulled me to wanting to go grab some yarn and knit something for others I don’t know.

I’ve only done it once, where I knitted a hat and gave it away to a charity that Yarn Co. was collecting for. To be honest, I did it because the hat wasn’t great for me and they were offering a discount on next purchases. In the end, I never did use that discount ;)

But now, after reading this book, I’m so inspired to dig out all my yarn that I don’t know what to do with and knit for the charities mentioned in the book.

I’d much rather be knitting for people who really need it and would appreciate my knitted gifts and efforts.

One that’s especially appealing to me is the Hugs for Homeless Animals. I got a whole lot of acrylic yarn when it was discounted from the Lewiscraft going out of business with the intention of making blankets for Flour. I’ve got more than enough yarn to make her many many blankets. So, instead of making it just for her, I’ll be making something for h4ha.

And the red heart yarn that I don’t know what to do with? I’m going to make something and donate it to a charity that can make use of this.

Maybe it’ll be perfect for Care Wear to make preemie clothing. It made my cry just reading about these little tikes. Honestly, one of my favorite volunteer activities back in NY was to go and hold border babies. So it’s not wonder that charities targeted toward babies would appeal to me.

And if you don’t knit for charity and can’t be inspired to? Go, get the book and read it.

I will ride this feeling as long as I can (when it runs out, I’ll go reread the book.) and try to do my little bit.
