SSK

June 28th, 2007 by May

I’ve been spending more and more time trying out and exploring the different techniques to execute the SSK stitch.

The following are the three ways I’ve been doing them and in the order of trying them out.

Slip as if to purl, Slip as if to purl, move stitches to left needle, knit them through back loops or Knit two together through back loops. IMG_4441.jpg
I’ve been doing it this way for a long time, but found it rather cumbersome (it was only very recently did I read in Arctic Lace that these two were the same action.) Now, I find the knit through back loops method not to be as cumbersome or annoying. While now it’s not hard to execute the stitch; the results are bumpy looking (and very zig-zag looking) and I still don’t like them.

Ever since reading about this way of doing SSK, it’s been the way I’ve executed this for the last few months. This way of knitting it was much easier to execute and provide good result.

I just learned about this on Wednesday on the mystery stole 3 mailing list, and it’s now my favorite. It does lie much smoother and doesn’t seem to create the much hated (by me) zig-zag when paired with a plain stitch the next row.

How do you execute SSK? Are there other ways I’ve not explored?

Which way do you prefer?

I do it the third way you described. I can’t stand the wavy, almost unkempt look of a k2togtbl, even if it is faster to do it that way. I keep wanting it to have the perfection of a k2tog, and when it won’t happen… anyhoo, that’s just me.

Slip as if to purl, slip as if to purl, put left needle through the front of both stitches and knit.

I do SSK similar to Alison. I’m not always consist — sometimes I slip as if to purl and others I slip as if to knit.

I’ll have to try the other methods you mention to see if I like any of them better.
