First Forest Canopy Shawl

Pattern:
Forest Canopy Shoulder Shawl by Susan Pierce Lawrence
Yarn:
Malabrigo Yarn Lace in Snowbird
Needles:
US 4 / 3.5 mm
Date Started:
January 25, 2008
Date Finished:
February 1, 2008
Modifications:
The pattern calls for a slight thicker yarn, so my scarf would be much smaller than stated, less shawl, more scarf. I knew from the yardage of the yarn, I had the yardage to do more repeats, it was just a matter of working out how many more. I ended up doing five more repeats of the main body until stitch count is at 275 instead of 195. I did 1.75 repeats of the Edge in total. I wanted a slightly bigger edge for my slightly bigger scarf. Since the edging doesn’t have increases as in the body, I would have warped the shaping of the scarf too much if I continued much longer.
I used about 330 yards and still have yarn left but probably not enough to extend the main body to the next appropriate repeat of 5 so I stopped. If you want to do the same repeats I did, I just counted and calculated to when the end of pattern repeat was a multiple of 5.
Will I make it again?
You bet! Pattern is very well written, aimed for the beginner lace knitter. The pattern is very easy to memorize and the knitting just flies! Without my modifications I would have been finished knitting in less than 3 days. I didn’t want it to end actually.

The yarn was just wonderful to work with. I hated how difficult it was to wind up (seems like all the Malabrigo I’ve purchased was the same, sticky, but I was told it was because of how tightly packed they are in shipping…). The price for the yardage is decent. I’m looking forward to getting more to use on a variety of lace projects I have in my queue to do. While I love this colour, it’s not suitable for more complex lace patterns. I’m going to get some in more solid colours to try out next.

Nicole has informed me that she has received the scarf, so it’s safe to blog about it. She wrote about her imminent need of scarves right in the middle of my knitting. It’s a perfect colour for her (she loves autumn colours) and it’s just the right size. I’m calling it kismet. Of course, the scarf itself told me it needed to go home with Nicole. I’m glad it arrived in time to cheer her up.

It really does look like a forest canopy. A lovely maple forest in early autumn.
