Year of Lace March

April 1st, 2008 · No Comments

The first package for Year of Lace has arrived.

I’m not sure why people are all concerned about spoiling the surprise etc. But just in case.

I was a little concerned when my packaged arrived and it was cut open and taped back up. But it would appear that all the contents are there. The yarn is a lovely feeling silk, but as mentioned all over the forums etc, it’s experiencing a serious case of crocking. So much so that I’m rather afraid to touch it, and afraid it’s going to get all over everything. That sure has given me much cause for concern. But as with one of the reasons why I signed up, the colour is lovely and not something I might pick up myself. I like being pushed out of my comfort zone now and then.

I think the design of the lace looks lovely. I’ve never seen any designs by Sivia in print, so I’m not sure about the quality of the work. The piece is all charted with some directions. Not sure if it’s enough or not since I haven’t started knitting it. I love charts, but I’m afraid that some people will be really disappointed in the lack of line by line instructions. I think I’ve been spoiled by Anne’s patterns. She’s got such detail in the charts and instructions etc. I’m going to be fine with working on the design, but am going to wait a while until we hear back about the crocking issue and how to deal with it before getting started. Not to mention I might not have the needles I need. It calls for US 2 3mm and the ones I have are not lace needles, so I’m not sure how I’ll do knitting lace with the blunt tips. My closest addi lace ones are currently on my Hanami. (Which by the way, is all charted.)

One thing is certain, this project (and my other lace project) will not go with me on my holiday. I’m just not comfortable travelling with delicate lace (cashwool for Hanami) or silk (this one, or my silk thread II). I just see myself doing something ridiculous stupid to them some how. Yes, I’ll have a chance to do a lot of knitting, but will have to find some other projects to take that are more klutzes proof.

And yes, in the end, the most annoying part of it is that stupid Canada Post took 1 week to to deliver expedited mail.

Here are some photos of the design if you’re up for it. I sure won’t be able to put up any until I’ve knit my own :)
