The right tools – sewing edition

December 29th, 2009 by May

I almost gave up on lace knitting before finding the right needles. The right sewing tools also makes life much easier and enjoyable. (Btw, on the needles front, while I still love my Addi Lace Turbos, I’ve since also discover and enjoy Hiya Hiya needles and hope to try out the Knitpicks ones soon.)

My shopping list for CreativFestival this past October included some tools I’ve read about and had to buy and try out in person. I’ve also been picking up items here at stores locally and when I was in New York at City Quilter (what a fantastic store! Don’t let the website fool you, the store is fantastic!).

My favourites so far:

  • Finger Presser Oh what a joy not to have to pin all the time and not have to keep going back to the iron for little things.
  • Applique pins – smaller and less likely to prick myself
  • Big Foot & Little Foot I had another 1/4 inch presser foot and this one kicks the other ones butt. Much needed since my new machine doesn’t have a nice 1/4 line like my old Genie did.
  • bias tape makers Not only a matter of time savings but for the little bias tapes ex. 1/4 inch, I’m not sure I could ever fold down fabric that small to make my own.
  • 14 in 1 measuring gauge I’m sure that there may be other gauges that are fancier, but this one is cheap and does the job.
  • bobbin keeper No need to dig in my sewing box for the bobbins!
  • Free-Motion Quilting mat Really helpful for fabrics with a lot of drag or just a large piece. I do hate to fight the machine.
  • I’ve also just discovered the joy of the buttonhole maker, and the free arm on my machine. I’m sure there are much more fun features to explore in the future.

I’m sure my sewing experience will be much improved once I make myself one of these pressing boards (youtube video), and stop having to bring out the iron. Flour will be all the happier since she hates the ironing board.

    For some other favorite notions.
